Drawings and Source Material

Careful observation and recording in the field is the essential core to all my work. Drawing is my baseline, my starting point where I seek to capture an image in a fast and immediate way, looking for lines of movement, shape and form or tonal shifts. The drawing and materials used vary from traditional pen and ink, charcoal and watercolour to other media including found materials and sculptural form. Whatever materials I use the process of repetitive mark making enables me to internalise the image and then in the studio to play with the image and abstract it. Thus while the act of describing what I see is important in its own right it also helps me visualise and imagine symbolic ideas and concepts which I explore when back in the studio.
