Sea Ware Hangings

Drawing on material collected while I was on an Artist Residency at Bressay Lighthouse in 2016 this body of work was inspired by the colour and size of Shetland sea weed known as Sugar Kelp, Tangle or Sea Ware. The hangings are made on Chinese Rice Paper which when wet is very fragile but when treated with traditional size drys into a resilient and transparent form. This process mimics the way in which the Sea Ware behaves when wet and allowed to dry.

I draw with pigment and size, sometimes printing directly onto the paper with the wet Sea Ware, sometimes using latex molds of the Sea Ware to inscribe the work which I draw into with inks and pigments.
