Following an extremely stimulating research trip to Orkney in the autumn of 2023 my fascination with the movement of the sea and its’ ever shifting boundaries has continued. I find enduring interest in exploring the elemental power of edge lines and the inscriptions and marks that stem from the movement of water over land. Much of the work I completed in early 2024 reflects these concerns. More recently however, I have begun to explore a new palette in paintings I refer to as the Fanciful Woods. This work is based on a fusion of observations of winter light on bare Birch Tree branches and the glorious colour of Cherry Blossom.

I am delighted to be able to show this new work in a number of forthcoming exhibitions:

Tatha Gallery Newport on Tay, Dundee. 17th May – 22nd June 2024

Milestones a spectacular, mixed show resulting from a collaboration of Tatha Gallery and Visual Arts Scotland, is a celebration of two respective milestones, 10 years for Tatha and 100 years for VAS. The gallery is based in a beautiful building with amazing views of the Tay in Newport-on-Tay. The gallery is open Wed – Sat 10:30-4:00pm and is easy to reach from Dundee

The Birch Tree Gallery Dundas St, Edinburgh July 2024

Since opening in 2017 The Birch Tree Gallery has specialised in showing work that has its’ roots in the natural world. I feel honoured to be showing my work along side the beautiful tapestries of Valerie Wartelle.

The Upright Gallery 3 Barclay Ter Edinburgh EH10 4HP 10th -31st August

The Summer Show at the Upright Gallery will feature the work of a number of artists who have shown in the gallery in the past. Ian Farmer who runs the gallery and curates all the shows has a great eye for contemporary work, I am so pleased to have the opportunity to show work at this lovely venue.

Artwalk Porty Festival

I will also be opening up my home studio and showing work at the annual Artwalk Porty Festival which will be held the first two weekends in Sept 2024 (7th/8th Sept and 14th/15th Sept). There is always lots to see and do during the festival so do come and visit.

News Update June 2023

After a tricky few years I’m very pleased to now be back in my studio enjoying making work and experimenting. Here are some details of forthcoming exhibitions:

Tatha Gallery 8th July to 26th August 2023

My love of elemental subjects continues and I am constantly drawn to make work about wild places and the beautiful Scottish coastline. I am therefore absolutely delighted to have been invited by Tatha Gallery to be part of their summer show Horizons 8th July – 26th August. The gallery is based in a stunning building beside the water in the pretty village of Newport on Tay and is easy to reach from Dundee.

Artwalk Porty Festival 1st- 10th Sept 2023

I will also be opening up my home studio and showing work at the annual Artwalk Porty Festival which will be held on the first two weeks of September. Lots to see and do during the festival so do come and visit.

Post Pandemic News

In common with many people, for me the last few years have been dominated by the pandemic.

As we emerged from successive lockdowns and I was able to return to my studio I embarked on a series of pieces about the loss of sea ice in the artic. Working on the ephemeral and fragile nature of sea ice has made me very aware of the catastrophic impact global warming is having on our eco system and this is a theme I have returned to in my latest body of work which focuses on the frequent storms affecting the Scottish coastline.

Visual Arts Scotland Professional Membership

Founded in 1924 VAS was originally an organisation for women artists, it is now a leading platform for national and international contemporary fine arts.

Solo exhibition: ‘Sea Wrack and Flotsam’, the Skylark, Portobello

I have a solo exhibition ‘Sea Wrack and Flotsam’ opening at the Skylark in Portobello on 29th Jan 2020. I will be showing new kelp inspired wall hangings. As with my earlier Sea Ware installation, in seeking to reflect the tension between fragility and strength the work is informed by the pivotal role of the kelping industry in the creation and exploitation of crofting communities in Scotland. The hangings have evolved over the last couple of years. In this new body of work I scorch and burn the rice paper in reference to the way in which kelp was collected and burnt to create alkali in the late 17th and early 18th Centuries.

The exhibition runs from 29th Jan – 1st March. Opening hours 10:00 am – 10:00pm.

North Sea Thinkers -Morimaru

I had very exciting news this week. I have just heard that I have been invited to join North Sea Thinkers Morimaru, an online platform bringing together artists, scientist and historians who live in countries flanking the North Sea. Morimaru, is the ancient Celtic name for the North Sea and all the participants in this project share a passion for this stunning ocean. The project is curated by Natalie Mcllroy a Scottish artist/curator based in The Hague, Netherlands. The work I plan on showing on the platform will include some of my Sea Ware Hangings and Watermark paintings

RSW 139th Annual Exhibition

I am delighted to have been selected to show one of my paintings ‘infinity’ at the forthcoming Royal Society of Painters in Watercolour 139th Annual Exhibition (RSW) The exhibition will be held at the Scottish National Galleries Academy, the Mound, Edinburgh and will run for the whole of January 2020.

The exhibition opens on Monday 30th Dec 2019 and will run to Thursday 30th Jan 2020.

December News: Exhibition of New Seascape Paintings:

December News: Spoondrift: I am very pleased to be showing new seascape paintings at a forthcoming exhibition with Jacqui Higgs and Mary Walters. The title of the exhibition “Spoondrift” is drawn from an old Scots noun referring to the spray that is blown from the crest of the waves by wind. The work I am showing is based on a research trip to the Summer Isles I undertook in Oct. In the work I seek to celebrate the extraordinary beauty and wildness of the Coigach penisular located in the North West coast of Scotland.
